In the heart of rural Massac County, Southern illinois, lies a hidden gem that has captivated the hearts of scuba enthusiasts. Mermet Springs Inc., once an abandoned rock quarry, has been transformed into a thriving scuba diving destination, drawing divers from far and wide for both recreation and training.
The mastermind behind this transformation is Glen Faith, a certified diver with over 40 years of experience. His journey began in 1987 when he joined the Illinois Secretary of State Police as an investigator and volunteered for its dive team. This role introduced him to the world of scuba diving, sparking a lifelong passion.
Discovery and Vision
Faith’s connection to Mermet Springs began serendipitously. While working as a police officer, he learned about an old quarry near his home in Vienna from a neighbor. Intrigued, he visited the site and was immediately struck by the crystal-clear water, a stark contrast to the murky ponds and rivers he was accustomed to diving in.
The quarry, which operated from about 1956 to 1972, was privately owned by Adley Schmidt. Despite initial reservations, Faith managed to gain Schmidt’s trust and permission to dive in the quarry. This pivotal moment laid the groundwork for what would become Mermet Springs Inc., established in 1996.
The Birth of a Business
Faith’s vision for Mermet Springs was to create a full-service dive center and open-water destination. He worked out a long-term leasing arrangement with Schmidt, allowing him to transform the quarry into a premier diving site. Today, Mermet Springs offers a range of services, including scuba instruction, equipment rental, and repairs. The Faiths, including Glen’s wife PJ, are present nearly every day, ensuring the business thrives.
The quarry’s unique features make it an ideal diving location. The limestone composition of the quarry helps maintain water clarity, providing excellent conditions for dive training. The Faiths have enhanced the experience by submerging various attractions, including a wingless Boeing 727, two Cessna airplanes, a school bus, pickup truck, motorcycle, and train car. These additions have made Mermet Springs one of only two dive spots in Illinois, offering a variety of diving options and training programs.
Community and Safety
Mermet Springs has become a significant asset to the region, complementing other soft adventure offerings in southern Illinois. Carol Hoffman, executive director of the Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau, highlights the positive impact of Mermet Springs on both visitors and the local community.
Safety is a top priority at Mermet Springs. The Faiths have implemented an underwater recall system and ensure that all instructors are trained to respond to emergencies quickly. The quarry is open year-round, allowing for various certifications, including dry suit training for cooler temperatures. The business also offers group trips to some of the world’s best scuba destinations, fostering a sense of community among divers.
