The balmy Thursday evening at Fountain Square was filled with the infectious rhythms of the Windy City Ramblers a Chicago-based brass band that masterfully blends New Orleans second-line traditions with the rich musical heritage of Chicago’s jazz, blues, and gospel roots. This penultimate event of the Downtown Summer Sounds concert series was presented in partnership with the Evanston Divine 9 a collective of historically Black sororities and fraternities.
The square buzzed with excitement as a large crowd gathered to enjoy the performance. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit tents set up by the participating Greek letter organizations, where they could learn about the history and civic programs of these esteemed groups. The evening was made even more special by the presence of Mauricio “Mo” Rainey who announced the organizations involved in the event.

The Evanston Divine 9, a collective of nine historically Black Greek letter organizations, played a significant role in the event. Each organization set up tents where they shared information about their history, values, and civic programs. The organizations involved in the event include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. founded in 1906 at Cornell University; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated founded in 1908 at Howard University; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. founded in 1911 at Indiana University; Omega Phi Psi Fraternity, Inc. founded in 1911 at Howard University; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. founded in 1913 at Howard University; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. founded in 1914 at Howard University; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. founded in 1960 at Howard University; Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc. founded in 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis; and Iota Phi Beta Fraternity, Inc. founded in 1963 at Morgan State University.
These organizations, each with their unique history and contributions, came together to celebrate their shared commitment to community service, academic excellence, and cultural awareness.
